Yes, I remember you telling me about the .exe's failing to update, but at the time I had similar problems with the .msi's for some reason, and thereafter never really tried again. They are working really well for me now so I guess we'll keep using the .msi's

 

Notepad2-mod_v4.2.25.991_ppApp was updated recently but our custom configuration file (.ini) for the x64 version somehow got overwritten by the default one. Fixed now and re-uploaded.

 

The new VirtualBox ssApp (v5.1.22.x) may not upgrade an existing install of a previous VB version, so you may have to uninstall v5.1.20 (or previous) manually. Usually, I can install right over a previous version but this time it wouldn't work for me.

 

Adobe Flash & Shockwave ssApp now includes Flash Player for Chromium-based browsers (PPAPI). If you use SRWare Iron, for example, this will come in handy. The installer is getting a bit large this way, but at the same time I'm not sure it's worth dividing it up into multiple ssApps either.

 

Size is never a factor, and if it is worth it to you personally, then a lite version can be made. Functionality is always more important than size, the goal of ss/ppApps is and will always be about simplicity for all users and uses, only the Lite versions can be used to reduce disk usage or resource hammering and this is usually for low end or limited hardware, the creators and users of each app have the choice and if someone need a lite version they can easily edit the ssApp to not run a setup for a certain feature/addon IMO, if they are good editors then hopefully they will also share what they create/test.

I am so disheartened with Windows 10 RS2 that I don't even want to bother with anything PC related at this moment, if this is all the best minds can do to make OS's better, I know I lack the time needed to make it worth while like we did with XP etc, as for the apps, I am using old versions and they work as I expect, so until I have a reason to spend the time, I can't, it's too hard to get the time to the things I need at the moment let alone the things I want. Maybe once I get more than a few hours in my day (from approx 9pm to 11pm) and I am not totally exhausted, I might do more than consume a few youtube clips, watch a TV episode or backup my photo data. I really appreciate that things keep progressing without me, I don't think it's just me that's changed tho, almost every person I know who used to have a PC now only has a phone, tablet or a macbook, the only Windows 10 PC's I know of are content to just use them as an internet machine and everyone else is still using Windows 7 - because we all know Universal apps are only good for phone screens and the MS app store is a insignificant bleep. It is only habit and tradition that keeps many people using a Windows machine, because we can do the things we want in the way we want, fact is now Macbook's can provide a better experience to "normal" people than windows ever could, so it's only use professionals who are stuck on Windows because we know how to work around it's quirks better than we do on Mac OS. I would never go mac, it's terrible iFile and Launch bar give me a sick and limited feeling in my stomach and working with the slow release cycle of hardware with accessories costing way more I just don't like the premium and locked in feeling it has personally.

I predicted than docked portable devices would eventually take on a tower and laptop PC when I first saw a tablet with a USB in and HDMI out, that a Tablet PC (aka Surface Pro) could be docked as a full PC, I never predicted that XBox One would stream gameplay via the network to any Windows device, that one was a nice surprise, the problem with it, it requires Windows 10 and many people refuse to upgrade to 10, so we are currently stuck until some technology comes alone that people want/need or depend on again, currently I don't see the OS being important anymore as more is switching to the web and the screen displaying it only needs a fast network connection to stream to and from a bigger processor anywhere in the world. VR might be the future in some degree, but I don't think I will have anything to contribute to that advancement, as such I will be mostly silent until a spark of hope ignites the desire for making something more - one person can NOT mod a OS, it takes a community, the apps we share, must be the ones we are using/needing ourselves, so with the MANY distractions the internet gives everyone now, I don't know what anyone else (even my/our team) want anymore, I don't even know which OS each is using at home;

I run Windows 10 on all my families PC's and it's sufficient with less Malware getting on any of them. Most of them are just using Chrome and the rest of the OS does nothing but update and get in the way.

 

It's true that habit is a great factor in how we compute. Even knowing this, I often underestimate to what extent habit plays a role. However, I can piddle on my tablet just because it's comfortable or I can use it in a different location, but there is just not replacement for the speed, access, comfort of a desktop for me. The distance of the screen, the keyboard, it can all be adjusted, whereas with a laptop you don't even have such freedom (although it's the closest otherwise). Often I have to do a deep search of something and the time saved and the efficiency of using a familiarly set up desktop PC with an adequately sized screen just can not be matched. So even though I have a pretty new smartphone (Samsung) I hardly really use it to look up stuff because it's too cumbersome to do so and I can't rely on the results when making work decisions. So I always end up making a mental checklist of stuff to check on my PC later that night. Tablets (I have an 8 inch S2) are good for reading ebooks, checking emails, watching YouTube. I can't stand to make notes on them (although I like the idea of it) so really those are more consuming devices and have no production value to me. I don't have a Surface or large tablet, which may make stuff like that a bit easier. I agree with you on Apple computers, I don't appreciate the hardware lockdown and high premiums.

Here, we only use Win7 x64 on our various PC's, although I have accepted that any new laptop we might get will run Win10 I have made updated Win10 images every now and then, but I haven't for RS2 yet. I think I simply have not yet been willing to download an .iso yet because I always end up doing other things and don't want to give up the bandwidth at that particular time.

We'll see, for now RS2 does not seem to be worth it yet so we can focus on other things until some later time. I like to keep on top of apps and hosts files and such things to a certain degree as I do use my PC daily, so that will probably stay that way for a good while to come. Other than that I have no news on the computing front. I do see people daily struggling to get their laptops and PC's to do what they want, and then I feel so glad and free having discovered the LastOS tools and methods. I've never been good at learning technical things from books nor from official places of learning (always had a thing for the underground in whatever shape or form) so the Last example OS's have been a great learning experience for me. Gradually, I learned some tricks along the way (in large part due to your guidance) so I have to thank you for that. It certainly wasn't for nothing and I still see it as valuable as it was in XP days. We can't help wherever the landscape is shifting towards but at least we have a measure of control that most people don't have.

Just today I was using a laptop getting it functional (while I was visiting someone) and to not have LastOS tools pre installed and the manufacturers bloatware and the shops recommended apps made it unbearable to do anything, the damn thing had 4 layers of Antivirus/Malware and real time monitoring in place as well as 4 different brands of printer software loading on startup, the poor thing wasn't even able to fully get to the desktop without the swapdisk being thrashed for minutes. I Hated spending 45 minutes just getting a few AV's and crap uninstalled to make it usable, knowing that I could have installed LastOS and had it back to a zippy machine in less time, but they were happy to use it like that for years (YEARS) the only reason they got me to look at it was unrelated to the OS and turned out the 4g Internet they were using had disconnected on the external dongle and they had no internet. Before I left I rebooted it and instead of taking 6 minutes to get to the desktop and then another 40 seconds to open a google page in the browser, it was on the desktop in under a minute and brought up the page almost instantly. It makes me sick that people leave their PC's like this but at the same time it gave me some more understanding on why people are choosing to just use a tablet or phone to do as much as they can.

Yeah, that scenario you describe is exactly what I run into all the time. Some weeks ago someone called me about not being able to load certain programs and when I got there it turned out to be a somewhat new (but underpowered) PC with AV, malware progs, all running at the same time but all only had 3 or 6 month trials and they had run out. One of them was Symantec which kept popping up messages (mainly about the trial having expired). So I got rid of all that, installed a hosts file and some tweaks, and used Autoruns and got the 27 programs that ran with system startup reduced and got it to finally be usable and responsive. Like Microsoft needs any more problems with the Store and Windows, for PC manufs to cripple PC's even more

Talking about hosts files, sometimes I go to SoftArchive (sanet.cd) and I get these pop-up pages even with a hosts file. The way they load is aggressive and that have these "loading" pages that link to other pages, so they only briefly land on those loading/linking pages and these don't have page names (they show up as 'loading...' in history). So every time I encounter one of those I add the root address (they are long links) to my hosts file but they keep getting new ones which is maddening. The internet is really getting majorly messed up by people trying to profit from it. I just went to Sanet.cd and clicked on a link, and I got a new one again. Just to show what it looks like:

Insane links like that, so I add ftgfmbxqkjda.com to the hosts file and the next day they have new links again and it just keeps going like that. I must have added 40 such addresses and they just keep spawning them. How does this work, do they really register ftgfmbxqkjda.com or how do they even use those addresses?

I use a few tv torrent sites. They also redirect to random sites. One of them as that fake microsoft virus thing whick play audio and brings up a warning msg. I finally found pressing ctrl f4 can exit this kind of tab. Keep that on in your mind when a site hijacks your browser. If your able to they often have a redirect site that calls the random ad site and if your able to block that with ad blocker or hosts you only get shown a blocked page and no ads. No a perfect fix either but preferable.

So I am the only one who uses the advanced features of AdBlocker to block the blackout and top level windows on some sites I do use - that detect Ad Blockers? takes 3 or 4 minutes to get it perfect, but then you don't get ads and you don't get popup's telling you to disable your ad blocker, win win - there is some random generated ones I also avoid these sites because they are actively trying to bypass ad blocker protections meaning the Malware they would "include" would be top notch stuff that would also have a few tricks in place to bypass any protections. I wish domain name servers would limit the registration of random names without linking it to a active phone number and address etc, it's retarded that ISP's and DNS allow such large batches of obviously random URL's to be activated then used to spam thousands or IP's and redirect to god knows where. That is why I added the comment of Ctrl + F4 that little sucker has closed off many bad popup/redirects in my time, I often do a screen capture and grab the top level URL address to add to our hosts, so many of LastOS's users don't even know they are being protected by us

 

Probably, because I was also offered to subscribe to the AakList for AdBlock once I installed the script. Before then I had never heard of it.

EDIT: By the way, Webmail Ad Blocker wouldn't install on my currently installed version of SRWare Iron, 56.0.2950.0 64-bit, which is the latest available in our repository. The latest version of SRWare Iron available is 58.0.3050.0. So I'll try Webmail Ad Blocker after I next update my browser.

 

Uploading latest SRWare Iron ppApps now, thanks for the tip. Tested PPAPI Flash from the latest Flash & Shockwave ssApp and it works in Iron as well so you won't need to expressly install Flash for it if you install the latest Flash ssApp.

I didn't know about AdBlock Plus and it being open source; installed it yesterday and everything seems to be working well (no probs with websites yet). Thanks!

 

Well, it has come to pass. Last night I ordered a 17 inch Alienware gaming laptop for my wife as I don't really play games myself but I'd like her to be able to use it in different locations and not just behind a desk she already needs to use for work. Also, the current laptop is 6 years old and not functioning great anymore. When she found out I ordered it she wanted me to cancel the order. Well, until she found out the specs. LOL.

The Alienware has 16gigs of DDR4 ram, a 128gb SSD and a 1TB 7200rpm HDD, i7 CPU, and a GTX 1070. How much ram does this 1070 have? 8gb. Yes, 8gb of graphics ram I first wanted to get one from either ASUS or HP, which have the nicest laptops in a certain price range ($1000-1500) in my opinion, but all of those seemed to overheat or at least heat up way too much for my liking. The Alienware has much better cooling which should result in longer life (talking 20 to 30 degrees F less on CPU and GPU than ASUS and HP). It cost me just as much as a POS 17 inch Toshiba I bought 12 or so years ago with XP on it and a 80gb HDD. I got this on clearance because AW updated this line with Kabylake procs (7th gen) which weren't available yet when they came out with their 4th gen laptops (R4) so they are clearing out the 6th gen CPU stock. But then there is only 4% performance difference between the 6th and 7th gen i7's so it really isn't worth spending $400+ extra over if you ask me.

This laptop has more graphics power than all the PC's I have combined, which is just crazy. The cool thing is you can switch between Intel integrated graphics and the dedicated GTX 1070, so if you're doing office work or similar and don't need the graphics power, you can make the battery last longer (not that you would typically want to game on battery). It has a 99kwh battery inside which is the legal max they can put in a laptop. Hopefully it will last a while. They have several open slots for m.2 drives and then the included SSD and HDD can be upgraded easily so it is a bit future proof.

You will want to use Win 10, it's only DirectX 12 that will actually use both graphics cards at once, giving you extra FPS or larger Resolution with stable FPS. I recommend Th3Ra!n's RS2 release, but you will need to tweak the hell out of it, disable Windows Search, Defender, Cortana any anything else you/she wont use, install Last10 Tweaks and turn UAC back on (it seems to stay off by default after a reboot of Last10 Tweaks, even tho I set my script in Last10 Tweaks to disable it then re-enable it if Win 10 is detected).

 

Yeah, I'll keep Win10 on this one for sure Hmm, not sure if should just install RS2 on it as the Win10 image will be very outdated. I thought about making an updated image now with RS2, sysprep and capture it, maybe even integrate the laptop drivers (after I update them and back them up from the AW laptop first) with NTLite. Then I could also remove Cortana and Defender and Search and such. I always feel kind of iffy about reinstalling right away on a new laptop (more so than desktop) for some reason, but I think it will be inevitable Probably should just use KMSpico or similar for activation rather than the included license as that would limit it to Win10 Home, probably. Do you have any problems with the hosts blocks for Win10 on your systems? I think ours is a bit more beefy than the someonewhocares Win10 block list, but in the beginning I remember we had an even longer Win10 block list but it was interfering with some Windows stuff (Store, I think). <-- Not that we would be using anything Store, I don't think.

 

You should not install your Win10 Laptop until you have logged in with a Microsoft account, this will Activate it to you and your account so ANY version of Windows 10 you install in the future will be activated on it (Only will need internet access during install or post install during a MS update/reboot cycle), then once you have logged in it would be better to fresh install (after you have an image backup and or drivers backed up, otherwise you will need to spend ages downloading software off dell's support pages instead).

See how out of the loop I am on Win10? So you're saying I wouldn't need to use different activation as it should activate any Win10 on that laptop at that point.

In case of reinstall I'll also have to figure out to get all the progs off there I will need, like AW config progs for the LEDs and other system settings. Wonder if Pro or Enterprise would be best.

 

Enterprise will not activate on a Pro/Home OS License. But even if it doesn't activate you can use KMS Pico without consequence and go back to home on the laptop at any stage with it legally activated, MS are still pretty damn good with their licensing. The benefits of Enterprise wont be required on that hardware, but you may enjoy the fact Edge isn't pre installed etc, depend how much spare time you have, but at the end of the day it's your wives PC to use and any Windows 10 that is tweaked will be sufficient.

Many Dell Laptops have a extra partition that is sometimes hidden, this will contain a backup of the installed OS, the drivers and other random stuff (such as AV software or free games etc), this is how they get around including Image on CD (on a PC that has no CD/DVD) without supplying a USB drive or something. Sometimes the only way to access this without going in to Disk Management and assigning it a letter, is during boot press a function key or use the bios to boot to the recovery environment, but you can figure that out from the support page.

 

True. I will probably just tweak the hell out of it first and do some updates and backups. If I don't like it then I'll reinstall. I could always use NTLite live on some things if needed. Yes, Enterprise will be different activation, true. Since the laptop can be upgraded easily or drives added, I hope Win10 activation is not too fussy about changed hardware spec. If it is I could consider activation with pico.

 

Windows 10 allows up to 4 Changes in Hardware, not including the HDD's or Ram (these can be changed all the time), the Motherboard and some other things, but you only get one PC at a time, so don't think you will run 4 off 1 license and each time you activate on different hardware counts into the 4 times, you can activate as many times as you want after the 4 times, but it will require a skype call to Microsoft and dealing with either a person or a robot. You will have to google more details as I have never done such a things, just read about it on MDL when everyone was using MS to fake activate instead of a virtual KMS server.

Most ad blockers have a whitelist, just whitelist the whole domain, such as www.thewindowsclub.com this enables that site to display it's ads and not detect an ad blocker. If you do go to a site that ask you to remove your ad blocker - THOSE are the worst ones as they will redirect you to known ad sites.
