    Last11_v2 (PicnicOS below this section)
    * Note: Run ssWPI first from the LivePE and pick the applications you want installed at the end of the installation. You do NOT need to select DirectX 9, MS Runtimes (Except Dot.NET 6), Notepad3 or StartIsBack as thes are already installed (they are included so you can apply them to other non Last11 OS's).

    Information:
We have tweaked this version of Windows 11 to feel familiar and fast, not forcing you on to a desktop that has tools and features that will distract and slow you down. Our focus was to keep it simple and bring all the features of LastOS you have come to expect.

    Features:
    * LivePE - This is for Backup, Recovery, Repair and installing your Last11 OS, it has some music included that auto plays when you boot it up, you can change the mp3 files in the X:\Music folder to have your own taste of music available.

    * ssWPI - This will allow you to select which apps/games you want installed (if you run it from the LivePE it will install the application after the Last11 installation completes.

    * Intro Movie - Instead of the "Getting things read screen" I have made the X:\sources\$IntroMovie\IntroMovie.mp4 play, as the Graphics drivers are not installed and the system is very busy, I recommend if you replace this movie with your own to use a low framerate video where it doesn't matter if the motion isn't smooth.

    * Settings - The first thin you see when your PC setup is complete is Settings, this allows you to set the PC name etc. I recommend you configure your drive letters and use this tool to move your Documents off to another partition/disk. You can right click the Downloads in explorer's Quick Link and change it's location to another drive also.

    Notes & Tips:
    * If you Select All in ssWPI make sure to untick StartIsBack as this is installed by default at $PostLogonApps and may stop installation of the apps if you try to re-install without uninstalling/exiting it.

    * You can sign in with your Outlook/MS account using Microsoft Settings and use the existing "password" to enable it, this will keep the User folder for your user, so all the apps and tweaks will still be enabled for you and all the online and onedrive features will work as expected. Store will allow you to access your apps/data.

    * We have only removed Chinese/Japanese and some Retail Demo files/user. so all features are available to re-activate.

    * Start All Is Back can be accessed by right clicking the start button and choose "Properties", This allows you to modify or disable it for the current user, if you are wanting the default Windows 11 experience.

    * You can add your own Locale to install by copying the AutoUnattend_USA.xml and naming it whatever suffix you will recognise (it will show up in the LivePE), then edit the Keyboard Layout, Time Zone etc.

    * By default you should always reboot after your installation has fully completed and you've configured your applications the way you want, including any updates and settings. Let it boot back into windows again before capturing an image with 'Terabyte Image For Windows' or your preferred backup software. This allows updates to be applied fully and your OS to process any scheduled tasks.

    * You can disable the Live Wallpaper by default by using Autoruns or Task Manager to disable or remove MLWApp.exe from startup. If you never want it on any installation; remove the "X:\sources\$PostLogonApps\MyWallpapersLive_v2.5_Last11_NoAutoStart_ppApp.exe" from the ISO/USB.

    * You can disable the Music in the LivePE by removing X:\ppAppsLive\zzMPC-BE_x64_ppAppLive folder, this will not affect using MPC in the PE.

    * You can disable the intro movie by removing/renaming X:\sources\$Scripts\Run_00_IntroMovie.cmd, you will see all the behind the scenes scripts on first boot. Do not reboot your PC until it's at the desktop with no command windows open. You can close the Intro Movie by clicking it once and pressing Alt+F4 without needing to disable the script mentioned.

    * You can edit the X:\sources\$ssWPI\ssWPI_Options.ini HideMenu=No to show menus again by default, I thought it was time to try the modern minimalist approach.

    * You can download new applications to include on your ISO/USB from: http://www.lastos.org/forum/index.php?link-forums/application-repo.148/
once you have downloaded them, drag them into the "\ppAppsInstalls" or "\ssAppsInstalls" folder checking the filename to know which one it belongs in. * Note: You may have to manually update ssWPI databases (Rescan for items) by pressing F5 in ssWPI if you update applications.
You can even use these downloaded applications without ssWPI on any PC by installing: http://www.lastos.org/files/SetupS-files.htm and downloading the latest: SetupS.SendTo.Suite_vx.x.x.x_ssApp.exe and manually installing it first.

    * Take Ownership - if you find your unable to access certain files/folders on your PC after installing, simply right click them and pick "Take Ownership" this will allow you to have full access again. If you have a large amount of folders/file to take ownership of you can use the X:\Appz\ResetPermissions.exe tool to do this quickly.

    * Spotlight doesn't always change the lock screen (on any fresh Win 11 install), to fix this go to Settings/Personalize/Lock Screen/ change it from "Windows Spotlight" to Picture or Slideshow, then change it back.

    * Widgets are off by default, right click the traybar and tick "Show Widgets button:, you must be signed in with a MS account for this to work properly.

    * If you are unable to get the LivePE to boot, first try removing all non essential USB devices (just leave a keyboard and mouse attached), you may need to grab the y:\sources\boot.wim from a Last20 ISO as in this version I use Set Res Auto (which makes it go to the maximum resolution by default), you could also disable the music from auto playing by deleting X:\ppAppsLive\zzMPC-BE_x64_ppAppLive folder off your USB stick. This may stop crashes for you. I will revert to a more standard boot.wim in a LTSC release when I get around to making one of them, just so it's more compatible out of the box. I was just hoping that people using newer machines wouldn't have as many problems with the updated approach, but this isn't always the case as there is so many combinations of hardware out there.

    * If you get a BSOD with NDIS error for the LivePE, it's due to the network drivers crashing, a few kinds of hardware are incompatible without their actual drivers, so you can disable the OnBoard network from your BIOS until you have the OS installed and the drivers ready to install, then go back into BIOS an re-enable the hardware again.

BSOD FIX (Direct Link): (Do NOT get this unless you are having issues with your hardware not working with the original release)

    * If you wanted to keep it on your USB stick named boot2.wim you could rename the original boot.wim to boot_orig.wim and then rename boot2.wim to boot.wim on another PC to have the option available to you if you think you will come across stubborn hardware.

Here is the Legacy boot.wim you can download and put on to your USB X:\sources folder replacing the existing one. It uses 300MB less RAM, has no Network or Audio support, so you will have to disable the X:\ppAppsLive\zzMPC-BE_x64_ppAppLive by deleting it off your USB. This Legacy one doesn't try to start any network or audio at all and the drivers have been removed. It doesn't try to set a high resolution display. So this is a three pronged approach to make sure those of you who are getting a BSOD booting this mod, so you will hopefully no longer have any issues.

Please let me know if it's still causing issues and I'll make a mod to the standard Windows 11 setup that offers to install a USA only version of this OS without any LivePE at all (will be as compatible as the original Win 11 release if I have to do this).

    PicnicOS's

PicnicOS's are designed to save you time and by making some of the choices in advance, anyone can use it, making it as simple and enjoyable as a picnic - but with less bugs so you can focus on the love and care that went into setting it up for you.

LastOS presents PicnicOS, a version of Windows with all the essential apps installed by default (well a good start for most users):
    Code:

The stand out apps that are preinstalled are Microsoft Office LTSC 2021, Photoshop and StartAllBack, Office can take a very long time to install onto your OS, so by having it pre-installed you do not need to wait, should you not need office then you are able to uninstall it, but if that is the case, you'd be better off using Last11_v2 as this is an almost empty OS and you can select which apps you do want to install using ssWPI.

Remember you can sort the menu using "ssControlPanel", on it's first page you can pick LastOS which is the preferred menu option, as everything has a place and it will never move or be unsorted. You can also now set the menu style by picking it in ssWPI, if you're silly enough to tick both options - it'll just sort the first menu type and then the 2nd type, so wont hurt anything.

In Last11 v2 I have problem with IrfanView, or more precisely with assigning jpg, bmp etc. extensions in it. If I open IView, it works with .jpg pictures but cannot be set to open these file types by default.

In Setting, Default Apps there are no jpg or jpeg or bmp (and who know what else) extensions available to be assigned to programs! I mean how bizarre can it get? Search for jpg or bmp doesn't find anything and scrolling down all available extensions reveals they are not on the list of extensions.

Jpg were opening in some MS photo program but I can't find that program in 'default apps' for that file type and now they open in print preview (not sure if I did something to cause that), and there is no way to assign these run of the mill extensions to anything because they are not available for assignment.

IrfanView directs to win Settings to change extension assignment, I suppose because it has problems with win11.

Installing Picnic10 in VM gets stopped right after launching the install itself from WinPE.
Both USA and Australia versions stop before the panel where you choose the which disk to install on.

    upload_2023-3-23_22-14-21.png

The VM is on a NAS and I downloaded the iso back from the NAS to check its sums and they agree, nothing wrong with the iso as far as hash sums go.

Previously I installed Last11 v2 in VM and also on one computer without any problem.

Will test Picnic11 but I was hoping for the version 10 because I have another problem on win11 (not with jpg, bmp extensions), I cannot compile a source code which I have previously compiled on win10 (in Visual Studio 2022). I believe this has nothing to do with Last11 but could be a problem with win11 as such. That is the reason I wanted to test Picnic10 OS.

    ==================

Edit: Picnic11 is installing now, so the problem is only with Picnic10 OS.
I have deleted previous vm with Picnic10 and made a complete new one just to make sure I chose correct windows system which I was installing in the VM settings (windows10).

Wasn't hundred percent sure on that first try, in case it would be responsible for the notice but it came up again. Maybe copying some files to some location on the usb would fix things?

Not sure what's going on with the Picnic10 yet, I'll test it later

But in the mean time use WinNTSetup to install it in the VM, it'll put any install.esd onto any HDD on any hardware. it's fairly easy to figure this tool out. You can find it in the LivePE's start menu.

The jpg issue was a real problem since Windows 10, the way to fix it is to right click on a jpg or whatever and pick "Open With", press "Choose Another App" from the bottom of the menu, then pick Irfanview (or other viewer) and pick "Always Open With This Program", then it will associate them properly. I never found a AIO solution to pre-assign them or I'd have done it for us all to not have that stupid photo app take them.

    -EDIT-

Picnic10 is installing in my VirtualBox 7 VM right now without any issues. I am sorry I don't know why it's failed like that on your's.

OK, thanks for the info, I will try that later tonight.
Good for you if I am an exception, don't need to re-upload the iso after some fix, that would be annoying. I'll check that floppy and also will look into that WinNTSetup. Didn't use it yet, only recall it being mentioned in past with some Last editions.

Funny that Picnic11 install goes without any problem. You would think if some floppy setting was causing that, it would affect other installs since I am not touching the floppy or such settings when making new VMs, be they win10 or win11 type. I might install it on real hardware this weekend to test if it was a bug in VM only.

As to the jpg, bmp... issue, I did that 'open with' and 'choose another app' but it doesn't work. Also this process looks buggy, I get IView as selected app next time I try 'open with' but only one button shows that says 'Just one time' or something like that. And even clicking that won't open the image in IView. Didn't have this problem in win10 but that might be because I use or used an older win10, the '2016' version (since it is the last version in which only the file name gets highlighted in List View (ie, not the whole column width).

You would think that looking up extensions in the Setting panel would have been made more user friendly, like with an option to show only common extensions. As it is, you have to scroll through hundreds of extension types, most of which I've never knew they existed. While I am not an expert in this area, still I know quite a few little used extensions. But that huge selection takes the mic, someone should tell MS developers.

I suppose this jpg issue would be fixed soon, given the extension doesn't even show up in that Settings panel (along with bmp and probably other such commonplace file extensions). But it makes me think of going back to win10 and might as well go back to that 2016 version. This is pretty serious hit to a computer workflow, not sure I can get around it somehow.

You don't have to tell me your frustrations of the file extensions. I've spent over 60 hours trying to find a solution that works. But nothing I try and others have posted on the internet work 100%

The only way I know fixes it for me is to remove/uninstall "Photos" app (some ms updates re-install it) then re-apply the last11 tweaks. Then the open with Always is back.

The file extensions ignore the registry as the keys you set them with are locked. Then the new method for setting them doesn't work for JPG when photos is installed and the whole lot gets screwed up by ms updates anyway... So if anyone finds a way to fix it. I'll make it into the first ssWPI option with their name on it :)

I did, but I'll have another crack at fixing it after

    BokenPhotoshop.jpg

I never realized but the Photoshop Lite and maybe even the full one doesn't let me pick a new font when using text, this may need to be addressed with an update (sucks as it's embedded in PicnicOS's - which is why we don't usually go that route.

    -EDIT-

Nah the full version of Photoshop works fine, must have removed one too many things :)

WinNT is proving beyond me. I don't know where the install wim is to be found but is seems OK with the install.ESD file instead. Boot drive I suppose would be the X ram disk but the last thing, the drive to install on is not to be seen.

    upload_2023-3-24_23-6-8.png

    upload_2023-3-24_23-6-42.png

I suspect it can't work since I just don't see the VM's virtual drive image I should be installing on. BTW I am not in VMWare or in VirtualBox but on QNAP NAS that has its own 'virtualization station'. But it works as those two I mentioned, maybe more simple, like there is no floppy drive at all in settings, but otherwise it makes VM in a normal way.

I found I can drop down the 'menu' as shown here but I can't select the drive image, it won't load into that field and search doesn't see the disk. I can only scratch my head.
    upload_2023-3-24_23-20-46.png

I don't think this is the way to go about it.
    upload_2023-3-24_23-28-38.png

This a better choice but still don't have three greens
    upload_2023-3-24_23-53-55.png

Another thing, how can I find from Last20 isos which win10 version it is? I am looking for win10 v1909 or later for VS2022 installation, I found that
Last20 LTSC x64 2020.02 is less than 1909 since VS 2022 reports some issue during installation but will run.
Now that I am looking around for versions, is Last20 and Last10 the same or what? I am getting properly buried in all these versions

Your best to pre-make your HDD's with the partitions you want using Partition Manager, if you are not sure what drives to make to allow Secure Boot (UEFI) to work with your disk, run the Setup for Last11_v2 and at the HDD stage make a new partition (It will make the required disks for you), then quit the setup and then run WinNTSetup.

The reason I say this is because the boot disk is the disk you want to boot off once the ISO/USB is removed, not the disk you just booted off (as that is removable media and your OS wont boot without one of your internal disks selected to boot from). If your not using UEFI then you can simply make one partition in Partition Wizard or Disk Manager, then pick that for the install drive and the Boot drive. This is the best method for a VM.

I do not know how you can expect any VM software that I've never even heard of to just work with LastOS's (or any modded OS's), Virtual Machines are not real hardware and do not act the same (virtual BIOS, virtual Hardware etc), the only VM I can say works with 100% is VirtualBox v7.0.6, all other VM clients have not been tested and I have no idea if they will work with them or not. I don't even know if they work on any host OS other than Windows 11 as I never built this for people to use with anything other than real hardware. Anyone who is able to setup and use a VM, really doesn't need my help to customize their OS the way they want. It's all about saving people time as the OS's I make can be done from ssWPI on ANY Win10+ OS -

My advice is do not use LastOS's for playing in/with VM's, they aren't designed to work with anything other than real hardware or VirtualBox 7+ (even I don't use LastOS's in Virtual machines, I use my sysprep VM's with vanilla OS's. I am not saying they can't work, but I am saying they might not work as expected/intended.

Last10's are made by Trouba and differ from Last20 which was compiled by me, the main differences are he has a lot less apps included and defaults to the password "123" instead of "password", he also has everything pre configured for USA only and seems to like his wallpaper to be slideshows instead of a default wallpaper.

    -EDIT-

So the point with WinNTSetup is that it requires you to preconfigure your HDD partitions and pick the drive letter you want to install to once this is done. Windows Setup allows you to do this during the setup, WinNTSetup does not.

    vanTorX Member

I understand then, WinNTSetup is not meant to be used in virtual machine installation (very likely can't prepare disk beforehand as its a 'disk image' or maybe you can but need to be a serious geek)

I have always installed Last editions and they all worked just fine, the Picnic10 is the first that has a problem.
    upload_2023-3-25_0-15-34.png

Thanks for the info on Last20/10, I stuck long time with older win10 2016 and got out of the loop. What pushed me into the search for the latest win10 or win11 is the need to use VS2022 (with .net6) in which I have a problem that I think is or could be related to the OS it runs on. Rather a complicated thing and I resorted to installing in VMs since that is much faster or more convenient to do. But it may not always be equivalent of installing on a hardware.

Thanks for the prompt reply, at least now I know not to bark up the wrong tree. (y)

You can use WinNTSetup in a VM, just make sure to run Partition Wizard before you run it as it doesn't create partitions, it only uses existing ones.

I did always remove DeepFont, but maybe with 2023 it is no longer a modular or separate component as in all previous versions. So I think in 2023 and onward it may be required then. At one point DeepFont was merely an experimental component; then it became a permanent feature but was still separate from the regular character/font function. But it looks like these are now integrated as I was able to reproduce it. I think it's an easy fix; there's a new version out so I'll grab it and test it. Sorry, it does suck as it's part of your release. I always use font functions and I've made several 2023's before that one, so I think this is a recent change in Ps.

As far as VMs (generally speaking) you can use VB 6.1.40/42 well on any Win10/11 host; and for guest any LastOS installs, they work fine. The exception being Win7 host OS -- in that case use no later than VB 6.1.34. I always use VB 6.x for sysprep VMs also to to do the captures. At first VB 7.x was a bit confusing as the VHD selection menu was a bit buried, but I since have used it too.

That is a very valuable tip. I have noted in the past that partitioning program was included in winPE toolbox but never needed to use it and so now, when the situation called for it, it wouldn't even enter my mind.

@Trouba, since I got this NAS (TVS 682 which is a notch above low end NAS products), I figured I might as well use it since there is plenty of space on it and the virtualization software works just fine. But more important motivation to use NAS is that the disk on my daily use computer is getting rather full. God tips regarding VBox though, thanks.

I decided to give Picnic10 in VM one last go, now that I have those clues how to go about it.
I hope the boot and installation drive are meant to be the same drive. I don't have 'three greens' but it is working, so fingers crossed.

    upload_2023-3-25_17-52-12.png

This the intermediate panel that sums up the setup. After clicking OK it started to apply windows image as seen in the first image.

    upload_2023-3-25_17-50-13.png
I got three green buttons after all.
    upload_2023-3-25_18-32-42.png

Install success. Above I posted the requirements for VS 2022 installation, which for win10 is v 1909. Is there a reason for this edition to be lower version? Maybe because it is Enterprise LTSC?

Yes, it's because it's LTSC. But that's good though, stable OS with only security updates.

    *** Don't use this update ***

    www.lastos.org/team/glenns/Updates/zzzPicnicUpdatesOverlay_v1.1.7z

This update should make the PicnicOS's have the latest SetupS and ssWPI on your USB and internally in the OS. you will need to manually delete the ssAppsInstalls\SetupS and update it by extracting the new SetupS.apz to that path as I didn't want to write a script to delete it for you. If you include the Games Launcher for ssWPI then you will need to update that too.

    -EDIT-

This update contains a buggy version of SetupS and you should revert back to the Original Release's SetupS/ssWPI and Games Launcher versions, just to make sure it doesn't cause issues.

I will go with Picnic10 if not going back to my old win10 edition. Will update the files on USB installer, thanks. (y)

Today the computer with Last11 v.2 from which I run an online game server logged out the user and the game went offline, also TeamViewer that I use to control this headless PC disconnected even if it is set to connect on log out screen (this is not default, has to be specially chosen setting).

When I came to the PC and connected monitor to it, it was showing some countryside image and it took me a while to figure out it is a log out screen. Why it logged me out when it was running the whole week without doing it? Not a question, just a rhetorical blowing off steam. You need to click mouse or hit keyboard key to show the password entry field... when I got in and found some icons on left side of screen were 'dead', couldn't be moved or didn't start programs they are shortcuts to, I restarted the computer and it started to update!!

But I have updates deferred to April 15 or thereabouts!! When I got back on desktop, I checked and the updates are indeed set to the latest possible date, April 15. BUT the setting is now greyed out, not accessible to change, and I know what MS is up to, they don't allow you to access this setting so you can't defer the updates another five weeks when the date comes near to that April 15, they make sure to push updates down your throat. I've had it with win11, can't use it anyway on daily use PC because of the jpg bmp issue (and probably png and all other common extensions).

Mind you I have seen what official win11 installation without any modification is like and that makes one appreciate the work you have done on the OS. Too bad I am not quite old enough to die soon and leave this computing world to young yahoos to whom MS is now cattering.

One other thing, I tried to set desktop to a plain color background but it seems that is not available in win11 anymore.

I only wish Picnic10 was at least 1909 version for the full acceptance by Visual Studio 2022. But that is not a deal breaker, VS still installs and works, it just tells you it is not supported win10 version.

Yeah it's a constant battle to get windows to behave how you want now days... I agree, use the windows that works best for your needs. Put the apps and tweaks you can't live without and make the most of it. As for ms updates, they can be turned off and use wumt to update manually ... I just re-enable ms update every now and then and that works too... To disable updates just disable the windows update orchestrator service or one of the others it uses. It's an easy thing to break

Not sure, I have never had a Last build automatically use Win Update. Now if you go to Windows Update and run it, yes it will automatically start downloading anything available there. So that's why we've added under Desktop -> right-click -> "System Tools" the entry "WU - Hide updates". Run it first, see which updates are available, hide the ones you don't want WU to download, and then run WU. If you don't want updates to install, don't run WU. Besides this it should never update by itself. Perhaps I'm misreading this but in case you didn't know some of what I mentioned, it may help anyway.

The way MS screwed up some Explorer and file association related stuff is very annoying. For example they offer the slideshow option, but since Win10 (at least) when the wallpaper changes, it refreshes any directory you have open in Explorer and bring you back to the top of the dir, and also it will bring forward any explorer window you have open. Can't rename nav pane pinned folders anymore, etc.

Pretty amazing they put out a Visual Studio version that is not officially compatible with their current LTSC OS, another MS headscratcher.

Thanks, this is good to know but that installation problem arose from that particular Last11 Glenn made last fall. On all the new ones it installs without a glitch. And the internet is not a problem here, the 'download while installing' works just fine.

I had bigger problems with VS that had nothing to do with the host OS. Code which I previously could compile would now give errors and refuse to compile without me doing any changes to it since compiling it last.

The first error I finally 'fixed' by time proven method, if it hurts, cut it off. Here comment it out. That second error about target framework somehow also went away with the first one. I am sure I never even looked, never mind touched this technical side of the code. Maybe it is because there is lots of Chinese language in this code since it is a game developed in China. But even Chinese have to keep these technical parts of the code in English. Anyway it baffles me even when I 'fixed it'. It could have been VS updates or its intellisense that has its own mind and maybe it altered the code as it had seen fit or I just don't know how such a thing can happen.

Anyway it has happy ending but I can't say I feel safe and comfortable with the whole thing.
